Skip Norman attended the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) in its illustrious first year, 1966, together with Gerd Conradt, Harun Farocki, Holger Meins and Helke Sander. His experimental documentaries focused on the political struggles of his time, as did the works of his
fellow students, many of whom he collaborated with. Yet his work in particular explored the impact of preconceived and absent images against the backdrop of his experiences as a Black man in a white culture. Artist and film scholar Karina Griffith and film restorer Masha Matzke shed light on the importance of Skip Norman’s filmmaking and the challenges of restoring his previously incomplete work.
